Shedding weight is a skill. Here are top tips from our experts.
Original packaging is bulky and heavy. Repackage all meals into freezer bags. Label them with calories and cooking instructions. This also reduces trash volume on the trail. Some hardcore hikers sleep on their extra clothes stuff sack. However, an ultralight inflatable pillow weighs only 2-3oz and significantly improves sleep quality, which is crucial for high-mileage days. Ditch the heavy pump filters. Use a squeeze filter (like the Sawyer Squeeze) or chemical drops (Aquamira). They are lighter, have fewer moving parts to break, and are just as effective against bacteria and protozoa. Stoveless hiking saves about 1 pound (stove + fuel + pot). You can rehydrate beans, rice, and couscous in a jar with cold water while you hike. It's an acquired taste but the lightest option available.Ready to lighten your load?
